Gorod Saree Silk
Garad Korial is one the traditional sarees of Murshidabad in Bengal and already identified as a languishing craft. Only very few looms are producing these sarees in the original format though some commercial varieties are produced by many to feed the market.
It is a mulberry silk saree of thinner variety and of un degummed kora (off white) colour body with or without small butis and solid red border. There is a small comb teeth like design at the merging area of the border with the body. The palloo may be having bigger motifs with the character of butis of the body.
Garad korial is generally worn by bengali ladies during any puja or some religious as well as cultural functions. The word 'Garad' or 'gorad' refers to pure or natural form of silk. And the meaning for 'korial' is not known. Some claim it was transformed from the word 'kora' which means unprocessed and it may be correct.
Weaving of garad korial is done on pitloom with two healds for weaving regular plain body and a special small heald at both sides of border warp (usually red). A spindle of red silk yarn is kept near both selvedges of the fabric which is dragged by the shuttle to make the border solid while the body is woven with off-white silk.
The buttis in the body and palloo are with the help of Jaala (adai) attachment.
After weaving this saree is given a typical polish with starch to impart a paper like finish.
