Jamakalam Bag 024
The Bhavani Jamakkalam is a traditional handwoven textile from Bhavani in Tamil Nadu, known for its bold colours, striking stripes, durability, and cultural significance.
• It is a Geographical Indication (GI) tagged craft, recognising its unique weaving heritage and the skilled artisan communities that have preserved this tradition for generations.
• The weave is created on traditional pit looms, where the weaver sits with the loom set into the ground, rhythmically interlacing yarns by hand to create these sturdy and beautiful floor spreads.
• For many of us, the jamakkalam carries deep nostalgia — memories of weddings, temple visits, kutcheries, family gatherings, village homes, and everyday South Indian life. It was once an inseparable part of our cultural landscape.
• Over the years, the demand for traditional jamakkalams has declined significantly, affecting weaving communities and threatening the continuity of this heritage craft.
• For the past four years, Rama Srinivasan of The Dakshin Studio has been closely collaborating with the weavers of Bhavani to reimagine these humble floor rugs into contemporary everyday sling bags and lifestyle products.
• The intention has always been to retain the soul and identity of the weave while making it relevant to modern lifestyles and newer audiences.
• Every Jamakkalam bag carries not just craftsmanship and utility, but also stories, memories, and the legacy of a weaving tradition.
